What should a client tracker include?

A client tracker dies from extra columns. Include the fields you will update, and leave the rest out until you miss them.

Free download. No signup required.

  1. 1. The minimum

Client Name, a way to reach them, Status, and Next Follow-Up. If those four are current, you already have a tracker.

  2. 2. Add these when the work has a name

Current project, project status, due date, last contact, and notes. That is the full simple Excel list most people need. Get the client tracker Excel template with these fields.

  3. 3. Skip these until you will maintain them

Priority, source, project value, and custom scores. Empty columns make the sheet look complete and the data look worse.

  4. 4. Split tabs only when one row cannot hold the work

A PROJECTS tab and a FOLLOW-UPS tab earn their keep when a client has two live projects or a follow-up log longer than a cell.

If the fields no longer fit in a row

If you have outgrown the spreadsheet, ClientPlot stores the same information as records: a client, projects under that client, tasks and follow-up dates.

Download the Simple client tracker template. When the spreadsheet becomes difficult to maintain, import it into ClientPlot.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a client id?

Useful in Excel so you can talk about a row. ClientPlot uses its own ids on import and skips spreadsheet ids.

Should I track revenue in the tracker?

Only if you will update it. Otherwise it goes stale and you start ignoring the whole sheet.
